Reuse of textiles

The production of textiles is resource-intensive, using energy, chemicals and water to produce the fibres, yarns and fabrics that are then made into textile products. Did you know that as much as 80 per cent of a textile's total environmental and climate impact occurs in the production phase?

If we transform our consumption culture and increase the use of the textile products already produced, we can reduce climate impact and water use by up to 50 per cent.

Reusing textile materials is an integral part of a circular economy. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute can help you and your company convert your textile value chain to become resource-efficient so that you both reduce climate impact and strengthen the profitability of your business. Are there residual streams from your company's production that can be taken care of and refined into a new product? What commitments in your business model can extend the lifecycle of your products and ensure they are reused again and again?

Design is crucial to ensure that textile products on the market are of high quality, made from recycled fibres and produced with respect for social rights and the environment. However, innovative business models that extend the value of textiles through different types of services and traceability to increase transparency in the textile value chain are also important.

IVL can help you analyse and evaluate upstream and downstream activities in your textile value chain to enable reuse.

Hire IVL for:

  • Mapping and analysing streams suitable for reuse, development of tests and implementation for increased reuse of textile materials.
